City May Put Winner’s Circle Out of Its Misery

We’re still reeling from the loss of Howard Johnson’s and McHale’s, and now another pocket of Times Square seediness may meet its ruin. The Times has it that OTB may close its 71 locations by June 1 if Mayor Bloomberg has his way. That means one of the city’s most unique eateries, the Winner’s Circle, might also go. To be sure, the décor of the restaurant, above the OTB at Seventh Avenue and 38th Street, is as dreary as the food, but we’ll be damned if watching a harness race at one of the tabletop TVs, with a shrimp cocktail handy, doesn’t beat watching the game on one of the ESPN Zone’s tabletops. Here’s hoping the state is successful in its effort to keep OTB from being put down.
