Street Vendors! New York Wants You to Operate a Green Cart

Down with kebabs, up with apples.

Given the hassles faced by some street vendors of late (the gyro police are everywhere), the city’s invitation to apply for Green Cart licenses may be a good alternative. As part of an anti-obesity initiative, the city is attempting to make fresh fruit and vegetables available in depressed areas. Poor or rich, hungry people tend to find gyro platters more appealing impulse purchases than fresh fruits and vegetables. Plus, gyros also have the added benefit of actually sating hunger. But the city has the power to make life easy or difficult for street vendors, and we’re glad to see the government encouraging healthy eating and creating jobs. Applications are due June 18.
