Jewish cooking tends not to lend itself to originality: the same kugels, briskets, and matzo balls have appeared on tables in the greater–New York area since time immemorial. But the 92nd Street Y is sponsoring a Jewish-recipe contest, to be judged by a blue-ribbon panel of New York food savants: our own Gael Greene, “food maven” Arthur Schwartz, “Food Talk”’s Mike Colameco, multiple James Beard–winning cookbook author Rozanne Gold, and Marc Murphy of Landmarc. So if you have a twist on the old traditions, bring it! The recipes don’t have to be kosher, strictly speaking, but they should be “kosher-style”: no meat and dairy in the same dish, no pork or shellfish. And dishes must take less than an hour to make. The winner will be fêted in various ways by the 92nd Street Y: The recipe will appear in a cookbook, will be served at the 92YTribeca Café for a month, and its author gets a free plane ride and two nights in a hotel.
