What to Drink When You’re Expecting

As our local baby boom perseveres through the financial crisis, New York's savvy mixologists are shaking up signature "mocktails" that anyone (expecting, driving, or contentedly sober) can gulp without feeling like a killjoy. "People are always pleased that they can appear to be part of the party," says Julie Reiner, who owns Flatiron Lounge and co-owns Smith Street's Clover Club with the very pregnant Susan Fedroff. The secret to making drinks taste like booze "are the bitter elements," says Reiner, who's concocted such sober treats as a Juniper and Tonic and an English Breeze. Little Giant owner Tasha Garcia Gibson makes her non-alcoholic drinks, like the Concord Grape Sparkler, with Greenmarket produce. "Starting a family is a tough decision," she says, "so we gladly do anything to make it easier." Yes, there's life beyond spiced cider. Click through the slideshow for a buzz to match your glow.
