Can the ‘Times’ Make a Maverick Secretary of Agriculture?
Never doubt the power of a Times columnist. Thousands have signed the Alice Waters–Michael Pollan–Dan Barber–backed online petition for Barack Obama to appoint a secretary of sustainable Agriculture at Food Democracy Now! since Nicholas Kristof addressed the issue in a column Thursday. Mouthing Off spotted 24,000 signatures at 4:39 p.m. yesterday, and there are now close to 10,000 more. Signing doesn't specifically support the local nominee, Stone Barns prez Fred Kirschenmann, but may help get the progressive plea across.
