Okay, one thing is to operate a “kitsch-en” serving “slutty pancakes” à la Shopsin’s, but the proprietor of Greenwich Village’s Lafayette French Pastry Shop, Ted Kefalinos, has gone way too far by selling pastries he refers to as “drunken negro faces” (for the inauguration, he changed the name to “Obama heads” for a day). Actually, one customer claims he referred to them using the N-word and told her that “they’re in honor of our new president. He’s following in the same path of Abraham Lincoln; he will get his.” Kefalinos denies this, and tells Fox News that the cookies are a work of art, and that some of his African-American customers like the image: “It’s not unflattering. I think it’s a fun face.” You know, the Villager has it that those “Obama fries” at Ray’s Candy Store were a bad idea and that Ray’s is struggling. As far as staying in business goes, “drunken negro faces” have to be the worst idea in the world.
