Vietnamese street-eats spot An Choi is still in soft-opening mode — in the next weeks, owner Tuan Bui plans to add items like beef carpaccio and prawn crackers, a grilled-tofu bánh mì, Vietnamese smoothies, desserts such as a coconut-caramel flan, and (with the SLA’s blessing) beer and wine. Right now (from noon till 9 p.m. on weekdays and until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays) you’re looking at pho, salads, and Vietnamese sandwiches in the traditional style (the chicken-liver pâté and five-spice pork is made in-house) and one in the not-so-traditional style (made with barbecued pork from a hole-in-the-wall butcher in Chinatown; see it in our slideshow). Sure, the bánh mì are a bit more expensive than over in Chinatown, but Bui says the ingredients are fresh (though not organic or anything) and his pickled carrots and daikon are crinkle cut rather than matchstick cut. Anyway, it’s still early in the game — worst comes to worst, they can always lower prices like Hanco’s just did after customer complaints. Delivery in two to four weeks. Click ahead for the menu.
