The next big food-universe throwdown is the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, June 19 to 21. Price alone usually renders the event exclusive: Weekend passes start at $1,185 a person and go up to $3,100 — and that's before you factor in travel and lodging. Perhaps bowing to the economy, the Classic has gone à la carte for the first time. Day passes to the grand tasting are available for $250 and tickets to the weekend’s finest event, the “Best New Chefs” dinner, are going for $250. This event has never been open to the public before. The dinner, with first-ever “alumni host” David Chang (of course), will feature dishes by all eleven of the magazine’s class of “Best New Chefs.” Paul Liebrandt, for example, is making uni-konbu gelée with cauliflower crème. The only way to get a ticket is to call Stay Aspen Snowmass (877-900-WINE) and ask for the event specifically. You won’t find tickets online.
