Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Paterson continue their hands-on mission to get New Yorkers to eat healthier. Today, the pair teamed up on a new initiative called FRESH — “Food Retail Expansion to Support Health,” — to get more grocery stores in underserved neighborhoods in Northern Manhattan, the South Bronx, Central Brooklyn, and Jamaica, Queens. With tax breaks and zoning incentives, the city hopes to lure grocery stores that find it too expensive to operate in poor neighborhoods, where residents often do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Paterson also introduced legislation for statewide calorie posting. The law would resemble New York’s, but also include “mobile vendors, grocery stores, convenience stores and other retail stores belonging to chains that do business nationally and offer standardized menus.”
