Sandwich Showdown: Republic Adds Num Pang–Like Sandwich Stand

Union Square’s Thai juggernaut Republic has decided to get in on that sweet Vietnamese-sandwich action, presumably after seeing the lines over at Num Pang a few blocks away. They’ve installed a “sandwich shop” immediately inside the restaurant, and (as you can see in our photo of the counter) “VIETNAMESE SANDWICHES TO GO” is now stenciled on the window. The sandwiches (served till 4 p.m.) are well beyond what you’d see at a Chinatown bánh mì joint— in fact, like at Num Pang, there’s even a catfish variety. Take a look at the menu below. And, in further Union Square sandwich news— Pret A Manger is coming to the corner of 17th Street and Broadway.
