Sad Moments in Nightlife: Café Select Seals Up Its Tunnel

Well, it was fun while it lasted — Café Select tells us that after some incidents involving chuckleheads who didn’t know how to handle a good thing, it stopped allowing patrons to enter its back room through the super-spooky utility tunnel. You can still walk through the kitchen to get to one of the city’s most distinctive drink dens, but descending through the sidewalk delivery doors was just that much better for impressing out-of-towners. Then again, if they had continued to keep those sidewalk doors open, some weekend warrior probably would’ve fallen in and cracked their skull. Wouldn’t want that, considering the problems the restaurant’s neighbor 218 is having over noise complaints. Anyway, in happier news, Select is now delivering from Canal Street up to Bleecker Street.
