Where to Celebrate the French (or Not)

If you missed Bar Tabac’s annual pétanque tournament last Sunday, sister restaurant Cercle Rouge is hosting one today, on the real Bastille Day. West Broadway between Walker and White Streets is blocked off to traffic, and you can eat grilled merguez sausage sandwiches while trying your hand at French lawn bowling. Get a complimentary celebratory Champagne cocktail tonight during dinner at Paradou, and cool off with a “French flag popsicle flight” at Counter. For $7 you’ll get blueberry-lemon verbena and vodka, Provence rose and lavender, and raspberry sparkler. Or you could thumb your nose at the French by attending a book party for Michael Steinberger’s Au Revoir to All That at Idlewild Books. Planning on storming another city? Find Bastille Day activities in Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia.
