Ground Support, a new café on West Broadway, has allied itself with Intelligentsia Coffee — in opposition to the Stumptown loyalists at nearby City Girl. “You develop a relationship with a roaster. They train your staff, and you’re on the phone with them every day,” explains first-time café owner Steven Sadoff.
The space, once a gallery, has smooth cedar picnic tables built by Sadoff with repurposed wood from Washington State, a zinc bar, and a bench acquired through the Department of Parks & Recreations’ Adopt-a-Bench program. Food during the soft-open period is limited to pastries like Grandaisy croissants and raspberry thumbprint cookies from Tom Cat, but look for salads and sandwiches made on Grandaisy bread with Greenmarket ingredients, as well as for a rotating list of sweets from family-owned “fading bakeries” around the city. (Sadoff takes suggestions.) Ground Support is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays. Weekend hours are more flexible, so call ahead. If Sadoff can get a beer-and-wine license, the café could be open till midnight.
