Foodies suffered a loss this week, and now, so have comfort foodies: Ben Ali, the beloved West Indian man who opened one of the country’s iconic diners, Ben’s Chili Bowl, in D.C. in 1958, died last night at the age of 82. Here’s hoping a memorial sprouts up at Ben Ali Way, the alley next to Ben’s where pretty much everyone in the world was lined up during Inauguration Day. Ali and his wife handed over control of the half-smoke haven to their sons some time ago, so it’s a safe bet Bill Cosby will still eat for free. [Serious Eats]
