In a non-story today, the Post calls tip jars “the ubiquitous scourge of New York” and points out that they’re everywhere now — from the supermarket to the water taxi to the movie theater to the baseball stadium. The paper estimates that the average New Yorker leaves $1,170 worth of tips per year at restaurants (assuming they eat out three times per week) and $568 at bars (assuming they go out twice a week). Mandatory tips are also on the rise, as in the case of the the Ace Hotel: Eater pointed out last week that the Ace is now stamping receipts with “YOU’RE COVERED: For your convenience we have already added an 18% tip to your bill. You can thank us later.”
