Is Max Fish Floundering?

Almost a year after Le Père Pinard left its home of a decade on the heels of a rent increase, the Lo Side brings the inevitable news that another Ludlow Street institution, Max Fish, may also be in trouble. The skater dive, which just celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a gallery show featuring the work of some of its artist patrons, has lately seemed like an anachronism in the face of the condos and flash-in-the-pan concepts going up around it, so it’s sad but not surprising to hear that owner Ulli Rimkus, in the face of “skyrocketing property taxes and high rent,” is trying to move to 195 Chrystie Street. Community Board 3 declined to support the application at a full board meeting last night, so it’s uncertain where the Fish will go from here. We’ll let you know what we find out.
