So Cool: Blue Marble Opens Rwanda’s First Ice-Cream Shop

Boerum Hill’s Blue Marble is making strides not just at home (they now have a stand at the Standard as well as at Brooklyn Flea SummerStage), but also abroad. After two years, the shop’s nonprofit Blue Marble Dreams will finally open Inzozi Nziza (“Sweet Dreams”) in Butare, Rwanda — it’s said to be the country’s first ice-cream parlor.

The project’s blog chronicles the nonprofit’s joint effort (along with Rwanda’s first female drumming group) to train eleven female employees in customer service, finance, English, food safety, and, of course, in the making of soft-serve ice cream (using a machine donated by the manufacturer). And this being Blue Marble, you can bet that when the store opens June 5, they’ll be getting their ingredients from local coffee, dairy, and fruit farmers. Hats off to Alexis Miesen and Jennie Dundas and their Rwandan partners — this is way cooler than opening something in Vegas.
