Ain’t That America: The One-Pound Halal-Bacon-Doughnut Burger

Shake Shack UWS is running some specials this weekend (the corn dog is back from now till Monday) and the midtown location may open Tuesday, but it’s not the Shake Shack that’s on our minds as we head into the long weekend — it’s the Crave Shack. In addition to “happytizers,” this three-month-old Astoria establishment offers what might just be the embodiment of the melting pot: a cheeseburger made with doughnuts and halal bacon. Yes, it’s a halal Luther! With “Crave sauce.” It doesn’t taste half bad, either; the glazed doughnut halves (they aren’t Krispy Kreme and their provenance is a secret) are griddled so that the burger ends up tasting sort of like a patty melt with sweet barbecue sauce. And we’re told a “one-pound” version is in the works. Now if you don’t mind, we’re off to buy a deep fryer so we can find out what happens when you crisp one of these things. See you Tuesday!
