What a Drag: Gay Institution Starlite Lounge Will Close This Weekend

Fedora has officially called it quits, via a sign on the door spotted by Jeremiah’s Vanishing: “It couldn’t have happened anywhere else. Thank you, Greenwich Village!” The Wall Street Journal says the name, phone booth, and some of the wall art will stay, but new owner Gabe Stulman and his wife will be serving “classic French cuisine” when it reopens. Meanwhile, over in Crown Heights, Brownstoner reports that Starlite Lounge, the self-declared “oldest black-owned, nondiscriminating bar/club in the heart of Brooklyn,” has apparently lost its fight for landmark status and, with its building under new ownership, will close on July 31. As the Times pointed out, it has been open since the early seventies. Here’s the good-bye message posted on Starlite’s website.

From the Starlite Lounge Management & Staff

It is with a heavy heart that we are forced to announce that The Starlite Lounge has lost its highly-publicized battle to stay open in its landmark location.

The stars will shine their light for the last time on Saturday, July 31, 2010.

We would love for you, the Starlight family, to come and enjoy our last night together in this location. But no worries, there are plans for a fresh, new beginning for The Starlite Lounge. Be on the lookout for e-mails and updates for The Starlite’s rebirth in a new location!!
