As buzz builds for the opening of Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich's megaproject Eataly, the space itself is getting ready for its August 31 opening. Craigslist is chock-full of Eataly job listings (even the grocery clerks get medical and dental!), and the space itself is getting ready for showtime. Passing by the main entrance on 23rd Street late Saturday night, Grub Street saw workers busily putting final touches on the retail side of the operation. Above, check out what will soon be the wine store (the white rectangles above the shelves are signs naming varietals Barolo, Barbaresco).
Once you've laden yourself down with cheese, salumi, wine, produce, and bread, you'll find yourself at the snazzy, blond-wood checkout stations (pictured below they remind us just a smidge of Ikea's Malm dresser). In the background, the still-draped housewares section, where we presume you'll be able to pick up traditional Tuscan stoneware alongside Batali-branded cookware and maybe a pair of orange Crocs or two.
