Bloomberg Speaks Out Against ‘Anti-Semitic’ Sliced-Bagel Tax

Jon Stewart talked mosque with Mayor Bloomberg last night, but more pressingly, he spoke out against the tyranny of the recent enforcement of an eight-cent tax on sliced bagels (and even unsliced bagels that are meant to be eaten in the store). According to a Wall Street Journal piece about a crackdown on 33 Brueggers franchises, In New York, the sale of whole bagels isnt subject to sales tax. But the tax does apply to sliced or prepared bagels (with cream cheese or other toppings), according to the state Department of Taxation and Finance. Stewart called the enforcement anti-Semitic, and, as you can see over at Daily Intel, Bloomberg seemed to agree: This is one of the causes Im going to work on for the next three and a half years. Our question: Where does the tax man stand on scooping?
