Williamsburg Gets a New Taqueria, El Tecolote, Tonight

When Mercat Negre closed last month, owner Jaume Reixach said he would reopen the space under a different name and concept. He’s doing that tonight: The name will be El Tecolote, and the concept will be simple, classic Mexico City taqueria. Meat will be smoked in house, the chorizo will be homemade, and the cocktail program will be overseen by Joshua Sontag, who just celebrated Summit Bar’s first anniversary and helped with the drinks recently praised by Sifton at Vandaag (La Superior should be glad it finally got its liquor license). So who’s the chef that’s leading this transition from Spanish to Nuevo Mundo? That’s still under wraps, but this much is certain: The mystery toque will be adding more tacos (and an all-you-can-eat deal!) to the menu you can see below.
