First Look at Buca Brick Oven Pizza: Wood-Fired Gnocchi on the Upper West

Sebastiano Cappitta just opened Bettolona near Columbia a month ago, and today he’ll fire up another wood-burning oven in the area. Buca means “hole,” and Buca Brick Oven Pizza is indeed a bit of a hole in the wall seating just twenty, but Cappitta is banking on the draw of pizzaiolo Attilio Reale, a Naples native who set up the pizza program at the Setai in South Beach. Reale went to culinary school in Turin, and as a result, his crusts are a bit crispier than the typical Neapolitan pie — “somewhere between Neapolitan and Roman,” is how it’s described (have a look for yourself, via the slideshow). In addition to the items below, he’ll be baking daily pastas such as lasagna bolognese, whole-wheat lasagna, and cannelloni — all of them (along with everything else, except for a few cold appetizers) in the brick oven. Buca is open for dinner (Italian beer and wines are served) as well as lunch and soon brunch.
