Monte’s Will Reopen As Monte’s, But Not Really

The Brooklyn Paper reports that Carroll Street institution Monte’s, which billed itself as the oldest Italian restaurant in the city before it closed last year, will reopen under the same name under the ownership of Dominick Castlevestri. The food will get a Minetta Tavern–style upgrade (they’re importing a wood-burning oven from Italy), but the Rat Pack–y decor (including the mural of Venice) won’t get a Minetta-style restoration. Castlevestri says he “had no choice but to do a complete makeover because everything was rotted.”

UPDATE! Monte’s name will remain, but new owner will change food and look of the old joint [Brooklyn Paper]
