Rap Feared at Prime 6; Rhythm and Blues Promised at Gowanus Venue

Yesterday, a petition gained some measure of infamy for trying to encourage the controversial Prime 6 to become a live indie-music club rather than “another Yo MTV Raps ‘bling-bling’ vip club.” (The owner has described the venue, which may be a steakhouse or a “French kitchen,” as a “high-end style Manhattan restaurant in Brooklyn,” with acoustic music.) Part of us suspects the petition is a put-on: Lines like “in this neighborhood, family comes first” and “crime is more likely to occur among urban audiences than among audiences of other demographics” are just begging for the sort of mockery that the petition indeed received (it’s been signed by David Duke of Louisiana, apparently!), but then again, we’ve seen some of the types who attend community board meetings, and we do live in a city where the NYPD has a “hip-hop task force” to make sure rap shows are babysat. Anyway, everyone can just chill.

According to Brownstoner, a 5,000-square-foot warehouse at 177 2nd Avenue, between 13th and 14th Streets, is being transformed into an “old school music hall” for live soul and R&B.; A community board member who voted in favor of a cabaret license noted that “this is in the spirit of what’s happening now in Gowanus,” so that settles that!
