Bagel Schmagel Brings ‘Paulie D’ Sandwiches to Bay Ridge This Week

Before Bay Ridge gets that new delicatessen, it’ll get a bagel shop. Gary Maugeri was a mortgage broker before he decided to open Bagel Schmagel with his brother Gregory, a culinary-school grad. He tells us their shop will distinguish itself from the others on Third Avenue (Bagel Boy, Bunch of Bagels, and H&L; Bagels) by making them the old-fashioned way, by hand-rolling them, kettle-boiling them, and baking them on both sides. Plus, just like another Third Avenue neighbor Cold Stone Creamery makes ice cream, the Maugeris will mix in their cream cheese ingredients right before your eyes (the “fresh fruit” variety contains four types of berries). Add to that: muffins and pastries from Grandma’s Bakery of Dyker Heights, French-press coffee, salads, breakfast items, and a roster of “overstuffed” sandwiches. For the record, the “Paulie D” is named after an employee who has never appeared on Jersey Shore. (We asked.)
