That Williamsburg Liquor-License Moratorium Probably Won’t Be Happening

The Wall Street Journal today delivers old news and new news at once. Old: There’s a backlash against young people in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, and Community Board 1, which regulates that part of Brooklyn, might crack down on all the bars in the area by imposing a moratorium on new liquor licenses. New: It’s a move of questionable legality, according to the State Liquor Authority, which actually monitors such matters.

Says an SLA spokesman: “We can’t do a moratorium … the courts have told us we can’t just do a blanket denial for a whole class of licenses whether it be an area or a specific type of license.” Oh, snap, CB1! We’ll be curious to watch this one unfold and see if the local community board ends up wielding as much power as CB3 in the East Village.
