Plans Revealed for Café de la Esquina at Wythe Diner

That rather cumbersome string of words is the name of the forthcoming La Esquina project in the former Relish diner space. While not the “beer garden” originally mentioned, it seems the restaurant will be another one to add to your alfresco-dining list. As a press release promises, the space will house a “taqueria, café, intimate back dining room, as well as an expansive outdoor garden.” We’re told the taqueria portion is being built onto the existing fifties chrome structure (originally known as the Wythe Diner), and that it’ll butt up against the garden for casual daytime dining, switching over to table service at night. The “café” will take up the front portion of the space, where the original booths and long lunch counter are found, while a back dining room will be “a little bit more intimate and exclusive” says a rep, adding on to Akhtar Nawab’s menu of La Esquina classics, “guisados” (meaty stews), and “finger foods” with daily changing seasonal specials. No word on the door policy for that back room — according to the rep, “it’s still being worked out.”
