Chefs may have varying degrees of concern about Irene, but here at Grub Street we like to say: When life throws you natural disasters, get drunk! And this weekend we can literally throw caution to the wind. In that spirit, we've called around and turned up some bars and restaurants that serve excellent renditions of the merriest (read: booziest) of Mother Naturethemed cocktails, the Hurricane. Whatever neighborhood you're stuck in (now that subways are confirmed to be shutting down), here's where to get your drink on, stormy-weather-style. There's even one special for anybody unlucky enough to be named Irene.
Copacabana Supper Club
The restaurant inside the revived famous nightclub has a Latin take on the classic cocktail: the Huracan, made with rum, lychees, fresh mango juice, pineapple juice, and Pyrat Rum floated on top, for $11; available tonight and tomorrow.
David Burke at Bloomingdales
Any shoppers daring enough to brave the storm can take refuge in a $5 Hurricane at the chef's in-store restaurant.
If you reside in the outer reaches of Williamsburg, head to the Drink, where the $5 house punch is going Hurricane-style this weekend, with a woozy-sounding mix of Coruba Dark Jamaican Rum, Denizen Rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, passion-fruit juice, lime juice, a little simple syrup, Angostura bitters, and Galliano.
The New Orleansthemed drinkery serves not one but two varieties of Hurricane: the regular contains 80-proof and Appleton rums, lemon juice, grenadine, and passion-fruit syrup for $12; and the Belfour's Hurricane is made with Four Roses Bourbon, Laird's Apple Brandy, aperol, and strawberries, for $11. On Sunday, the bar will host a candlelit party from 6 p.m. onward, with drink specials and oysters.
The Carlton Hotel's restaurant is offering half off the Parisian punch bowl ($21; normally $42). The tipple is a gin-based riff on the Hurricane, with housemade orange-spiced brandy, Hayman's gin, pressed apple cider, pineapple, cranberry, and lemon juices.
Even uptowners need to let loose sometimes, especially when natural forces beyond our control are raging. For something that's still a bit refined, neighborhood trattoria Sfoglia will offer a $15 Hurricane Italiano, with Goslings dark rum, Disaronno, nectarine puree, orange and pineapple juices, and a grenadine-soaked-strawberry garnish.
Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel
This bote's take on the Hurricane is dubbed the "Me, Myself, and Irene," a mix of Malibu Rum, and white-cranberry and pineapple juices, with a dark rum floater; $16.
Plus: All of the B.R. Guest restaurants (that's Atlantic Grill, Bills Bar & Burger, Blue Fin, Blue Water Grill, Dos Caminos, Isabellas, Ocean Grill, Primehouse New York, Ruby Foos, and Wildwood Barbeque) have $10 Hurricanes all weekend; the drink is on the house for anybody unlucky enough to be named Irene.
