They’ve been saying it forever, but Smithfield Foods Inc., the world’s largest pork producer, has announced that it plans to end the practice of keeping pregnant pigs in gestation crates. Like, for serious this time. According to the Huffington Post, “By the end of this year, the company said that 30 percent of the sows at its farms will be in group housing rather than the crates.” Great.
