Is Otto Pizza the New (Kinder, Gentler) Upper Crust?

Maine-based pizza purveyor Otto will expand once again — this time to Coolidge Corner. The mini-chain, known for fun toppings, opened in Harvard Square last year (and recently got even more publicity thanks to angry Mario Batali, who called the humble shop’s owners “d bags and thieves” for using the same name as one of his New York restaurants. Shouldn’t you be above that kind of thing when you’re Mario Batali?). But Batali’s ego isn’t the only thing that cheery Otto might threaten. We’re looking at you, Upper Crust.

Otto will take over the old Friendly’s space on Harvard Street; they plan to open in May. This location will have 60 seats; owners call the ‘hood “bumping.”

Upper Crust has a location just down the block and a location in Harvard Square; can the two pie purveyors go head to head? Considering UC’s multitudinous woes, we give Otto, known for its personable vibe, the edge here. Our bet is on more Ottos springing up in the not-so-distant future. Bring on the mashed potato pizza, please.
