In Houston, a 278-pound castrated male pig just made a dream come true. At the city’s annual livestock show and rodeo, an oinker named Kipper — who has a street value of $150.00 — was auctioned off for $178,000. Why? Good ol’ Texan philanthropy. Kids who raise animals are offered enough money for college in this annual fund-raiser, which sounds like a lot more fun than a bake sale, even with bacon-sprinkled brownies. [NYT]
