June’s CB 2 Lineup Includes Colicchio and the Return of Chumley’s

The next lineup of liquor license applicants to appear in front of Community Board 2 has just been updated and there are definitely a few standouts, especially for the June 14 meeting. First up is Tom Colicchio and Craftsteak LLC (d.b.a. Colicchio & Son), who are looking to serve beer and wine from a “freestanding” concession in front of 860 Washington Street, the long-standing site of the battered old Gansevoort Market building and future home of a large glass tower. We reached out to Colicchio, who is opening in the Hamptons this summer as well; the chef’s PR e-mailed to say they do not have any news to share at the moment, which is obviously not the case. So secretive, that Tom!

The restaurateurs behind Public may be expanding as well: AvroKO Hospitality is scheduled to appear seeking a full liquor license for 615 Hudson, once home to Song Chu Mei, and incidentally the same address that Colicchio’s former chef de cuisine Damon Wise was said to be looking at last year.

And finally, it’s been five years in the making: Legendary Greenwich Village speakeasy Chumley’s, which has been rebuilt after a wall collapsed and destroyed the building in 2007, will appear before CB2 seeking a full liquor license. We’ve been down this road before, but there’s hope for the bar that was reputedly the site of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald’s wedding reception almost one hundred years ago. “I’m going to shoot for the holidays,” Chumley’s owner Jim Miller told City Room earlier this year; just in time for the return of Gatsby. “First you take a drink,” wrote Fitzgerlad, maybe at Chumley’s, “then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you.”
