Neither British developer Ross Morgan nor his partner Frank Ross (formerly of the Rose Bar) showed up for a Community Board 2 SLA hearing earlier this week to work out details on their application to sell liquor at a bi-level restaurant/market still under construction at Morgan’s renovated nineteenth century Brewster carriage house on Mott and Broome streets.

That could have created some problems with the powers that be, but Morgan told us he hadn’t been aware of the hearing date. His lawyer said the scheduling was a “mistake,” and noted that the SLA committee had already approved his company’s first application, in 2010, despite objections by Chinatown residents who called the proposed underground oyster saloon “a fire trap,” as Eater noted. Morgan said electrical contractors were on the scene, and he hopes to open the spot “before Christmas, God willing.” Committee co-chair Richard Stewart stated Tuesday night that the New York State Liquor Authority in Albany would make a final decision on Morgan’s liquor license app within six months.
