As one of three finalists picked to potentially helm the food-service operation inside the observatory at 1 World Trade Center, Benchmarc Restaurant Group’s Marc Murphy tells Food Republic that his experience working for years as a chef at the Windows on the World, on the 106th and 107th floors of the World Trade Center’s North Tower, are an advantage. “I think I have a leg up on the logistics about getting parties to work up there,” says Murphy. When asked about his emotional connection to the site, he says, “I think it’s personal for any American. I would look at it as an honor to be running the food on top of one of the most symbolic buildings in the world. It’s emotional and powerful.” As a tourist attraction and landmark unto itself, the observatory is expected to generate more than $100 million in revenues a year when it opens to the public in 2014.
