The full board of Manhattan’s Community Board 2 voted to deny a liquor license renewal to Hudson Clearwater at last night’s meeting, claiming that the hip spot had violated the license’s terms by allowing customers to enter through a backyard garden instead of through its stated address on 447 Hudson Street. “All you had to do was open the [front] door,” said Carter Booth, the committee’s co-chair. Attendees complained that the converted storefront on Morton has attracted a noisy nighttime crowd, and one woman said she couldn’t sleep without a “sound machine.” John Barboni, an architect and co-owner of the restaurant, tells Grub Street that he and his partners will probably appeal the vote, and that the restaurant used the side door as an entrance in order to better deal with crowds. “We’ve been in the business for a while,” says Barboni. “We didn’t want to be overrun with people from day one.”
