Filipino Gastropub Jeepney Brings “Barrio Fiesta” Fare to the East
“Beers, food, women, and jeeps” is the motto of the new Filipino gastropub from the Maharlika team, and extends to its design, too: Tabletops are colorfully numbered and embellished, scantily clad pinup girls decorate the walls, and Asian beers are meant to accompany shareable plates of “barrio fiesta” fare. Chef-partner Miguel Trinidad collaborates with Daniel “Chino” Parilla, Minetta Tavern sous-chef and a consultant here, on dishes like fried-fishbone salad, chicken-fat wings, and a longga burger made with skinless sausage, Kewpie-Maggi aïoli, and banana ketchup. Jeepney, named for the garish and cramped public taxis built from World War II-era Army jeeps, maintains the East Village’s Filipino-food equilibrium by replacing Sa Aming Nayon and inheriting its tranquil garden.
