An unproven theorem of New York pie states that every pizza oven that goes dark will be balanced out by a new wood-burning oven somewhere else. Take the downbeat story of Fornino on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, which got off to an ambitious start in 2010, but lost chef and partner Michael Ayoub the next year. The restaurant soldiered on but closed abruptly last month, without warning, and its contents were auctioned off yesterday. Here’s Park Slope reports there are already plenty of rumors about its replacement.
There’s hope, however, for those who miss Ayoub’s grilled pizza skills. Since leaving the full-service restaurant, the chef has channeled his energies into his Williamsburg wood-burner. He’ll open a concession at Brooklyn Bridge Park this summer, but that’s not all: Grub Street hears from a reliable source that Ayoub is opening a second shop in Greenpoint, at 849 Manhattan Avenue, sometime this summer.
