Could this be the end of Chiclets? Gum sales, down 6 percent in the U.S. since 2010, are steadily declining nationwide, as well as in Europe and Japan. One company that’s facing significant losses is Mondelez, which owns brands like Trident and Chiclets. CEO Irene Rosenfeld says new ads will focus on the oral-care benefits of gum — as if that’s going to make it more appealing and boost sales. But how else do you compete with those weird but attention-grabbing Orbit commercials? Or that sexy 5 Gum packaging? Think twice before you buy Altoids. [AP]
