Marcella Hazan’s Son Wants to Bottle Her World-Famous Tomato Sauce

The perfect homage.
The perfect homage.

Exciting news for fans of Marcella Hazan’s simple, classic Italian cooking: Her deceptively uncomplicated tomato sauce — just tomatoes, onions, butter, and salt — is considered so seminal that the Times placed it next to her obituary when she passed away in 2013. Now her son, Giuliano Hazan, has started a Kickstarter to “faithfully” jar his mother’s iconic recipe, under the name “Marcella’s Classic Italian Tomato Sauce.”

Giuliano gave the Associated Press’s food editor J.M. Hirsch a bottle to try out, and Hirsch gave the product a thumbs-up: “Slightly smoother than the batch we made, possibly a little saltier, but none of that was a detriment. Which is to say, if you want a real deal Italian pasta sauce, but are too busy to whip up even a four-ingredient recipe, this may well have you covered.”

Giuliano’s goal is to raise $48,500 by the end of the month, so that he can have bottles ready by June.
