Fall Preview: Cool Winds Bring Good Eats

Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield with dinner
at the John Dory.Photo: Hans Gissinger

This year's Fall Preview brings news of a good food future. Rob and Robin highlight the season's major openings: Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield's British seafood restaurant, the John Dory; Zak Pelaccio's Fatty 'Cue; and Drew Nieporent's Corton. If you're hungry in Tribeca, there's a David Bouley restaurant nearby, and the Robs have created a helpful map. They also wrote a to-do list, so you'll know where to eat among all the fall openings. When you work your way through those, consult the "best of the rest." But if you need a new eating destination now, Rob and Robin highlight Black Iron Burger Shop in the East Village. Seasonal abundance begins!

One Star for Matsugen; The Best Organic Hot Dog

Inside Matsugen, a soba temple.Photo: Noah Kalina

This week in New York, Adam Platt visits Matsugen with his wife. Neither was enthusiastic. In between gathering intel on openings — this week it’s Pomegranate, a new Jewish grocery in Midwood and White Star, Sashe Petraske’s latest “sipping spirts” bar — Rob and Robin taste-tested seven organic hot dogs and went cool-hunting for new chef’s hats. Gael Greene visited Sheridan Square and found her favorite starter on the menu: grits. Basil is everywhere now, and Queens Thai restaurant Sripraphai uses it to good effect in this week’s In Season recipe for pad kra pao. And if you’re still in a DIY mood, Rob and Robin tell us about a ricotta-making demo this week at Whole Foods on Bowery.

Locavores Considered; We Love Our Lamb, But Oh, You Kid!

A "meh" review for Hundred Acres.Photo: Noah Kalina

This week in New York, Adam Platt delivers his opinion on not one, but two, Haute Barnyard destinations, Hundred Acres and Forge. Rob and Robin herald the openings this week of Apiary, Pita Joe, and Vintage Irving. Gael Greene checks out the newly opened Delicatessen. There's a big feature on the new wave of goat dishes to hit the city, and a newly designed potato is the focus of former 50 Carmine chef Sara Jenkins's salad in this week's "In Season" recipe.

The Farmer As Cult Hero; Four Stars for General Greene

the general greene

Brooklyn's The General Greene.Photo: iStockphoto

In the magazine this week, Susan Burton profiles Amy Hepworth, an upstate farmer who supplies the Park Slope Coop with produce and an obsessed following. The Underground Gourmet gave a whopping four stars to Brooklyn newcomer the General Greene, and Gael Greene writes that “excitement definitely scents the air” at Convivio. In "Openings," Rob and Robin herald the debut of Alain Alegretti's luxe Flatiron French restaurant Allegretti as well as a gluten-free pasta restaurant called Opus. Rob and Robin also explore new products this week, including a gelato and a salami, as well as identify a new food trendlet: variations on affogato al caffè, or ice cream drowned in hot espresso. Clip out the "In Season" tabbouleh recipe from Ilili's Philippe Massoud and be sure to read the news on Le Cirque's Maccioni family and their plans for an affordable pasta restaurant in the Beekman Towers.

Cheap Eats 2008

Cheap Eats!
It's Cheap Eats time here at New York, and our food editors have compiled a list of affordable, delicious restaurants at great risk to their body mass indexes. In addition to the annual guide, Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld also found the city's tastiest snacks for about a buck. While dumplings dominate, there are a few discount slices and some lamb skewers worth sampling. But what if you have a whole $5 in your pocket? There are ten new tastes to try. And why does your burger cost so much money these days? We've broken down how rising food costs affect your favorite pizza and burger joints. Not to be outdone by the Robs, Adam Platt challenged Harry Hawk of Water Taxi Beach and chef Olivier Muller of DB Bistro Moderne to a discount high-low cook-off. The two were charged with making a three-course meal for two with a $20 budget. We've got the recipes, too. Strewn throughout the big list are Cheap Eats recommendations by some high-end chefs including Anne Burrell and Neil Ferguson. After all that, Rob and Robin still managed pick up some additional intel: Bar Carrera will spread the good word on tapas with a new location in the South Village, and Union Square Wine & Spirits has partnered with FreshDirect to bring paired wines to your doorstep. Now if you'll excuse us, we have a to-eat list to push through.

Finally, dinner we can afford. »

Scarpetta: three stars from Adam Platt.Photo: Noah Sheldon

In New York this week, Adam Platt finds three stars in his heart for Scott Conant's Scarpetta and Gael Greene calls the soba at Matsugen an “exciting revelation.” In "Openings" this week, Rob and Robin introduce us to Brooklyn's new American bistro Peaches, Soho's long-awaited Delicatessen, Michael White's new Convivio, and the Tabla Street Cart. Ignacio Mattos provides this week's recipe for grilled fava beans, and the staff of three lemonade stands talk business in a recession. It's tough all over.

A Mid-Summer Bouquet of Surprises

benoit

Platt hated the room at Benoit, and it only got worse from there.Photo: Zach Desart

In the magazine this week, New York's food editors bring you a bevy of mid-summer surprises. Rob and Robin report on a much-needed ice and gelato bar in Brooklyn, a paella palace on the west side, and a long-delayed Asian bistro in the East Village. Adam Platt visits Alain Ducasse's much-hyped Benoit, finds it utterly, shamefully wanting, and hands it an ignominious bagel. And Grub Street's Josh Ozersky presents a guide to summer grilling that will, hopefully, make you forget the hardened hamburgers and gray hot dogs of the Fourth of July. Add in news of a new Whole Foods and a labor shortage facing New York's kosher meat business, and it's another good week for feeding in New York.

Summer Eats: Lobster, Popsicles, Beer, and Soba

popsicle

Sit back and enjoy the summer. And the Summer Issue.Photo: Kang Kim

Summer's here, and depending on where you're coming from, that might mean cold noodles, spiked Popsicles, or just the simple pleasure of sitting outside drinking cold beer. Or maybe a combination of all three. In this week's issue, Rob and Robin introduce Jean-Georges Vongerichten's latest effort, Matsugen, a soba-noodle restaurant in the space that was 66. In the annual Summer Guide, we find the city's new-wave Popsicles; learn all about selecting, cooking, and eating lobsters; and wash it all down at a new beer garden in Williamsburg.

Making Sense of Summer Eats

bar q

Adam Platt visits Bar Q in the West Village this week.Photo: Zach Desart

The week in New York, Adam Platt visits two very different sorts of barbecue restaurants in Bar Q and Wildwood Barbeque — you may be surprised by his preference. Rob and Robin take it upon themselves to taste-test all the gelato in the West Village, Silvano Marchetto of Da Silvano goes downscale with his new restaurant, and Harold Moore of Commerce shares a recipe for beef tataki with scallion greens. Finally, the Robs introduce Audrey Saunders' new cocktail destination, Clover Club, and Marc (son of Larry) Forgione's new restaurant, Forge, all in this week's issue.

Eat Pizza in Brooklyn and Buy Meat in Union Square

brooklyn pizza

Brooklyn pizza beyond Di Fara and Totonno's.Photo: Noah Kalina

In this week's magazine, Rob and Robin deliver the definitive guide to buying meat and dairy in the Union Square Greenmarket, along with welcome news of a pizza renaissance in Brooklyn. The Robs also manage to find a decent boxed wine and deliver news of two new restaurants, in Harlem and on the Upper East Side. You'll also find a recipe for fluke and Gael Greene's notes on Hundred Acres. In the "Intelligencer section," read about a former West Village diner destined to be a high-end chophouse.
