OBAO isn’t the only restaurant that Ace Watanasuparp and Chai Huadwattana opened this week. Yesterday they also opened Spot Dessert Bar with another one of the city’s prominent Asian chefs, Pichet Ong, in the below-ground space that used to house the Iron Fairies store. With so many dessert options already on this block alone (Pinkberry, Red Mango, Yogurt Station, and the soft-serve at Baoguette Café, to name a few), it’s hard to imagine East Villagers are craving another one, but leave it to Pichet Ong to keep things interesting by offering exotically flavored puddings, cupcakes, and cookies, as well as creations such as a miso ice-cream sandwich (the wildest thing to happen to Asian ice-cream sandwiches since Xie Xie!).

The pièce de résistance here, and the thing that’s bound to pull in the Japanese hipsters in droves, is the ice cream, since you can choose from various ingredients that are then “Pacotized” into an ice-cream base via a Pacojet machine (if you’re not familiar with this process, Chow posted about the “ice cream of the gods” a few years ago). You can then top the custom-flavored ice creams and sherbets with everything from caramelized Rice Krispies to coconut macaroons. Since Ong is only a consulting chef, it’s uncertain whether the menu will change as often as P*Ong’s did, but here, in any case, are the initial offerings.
